Which type fits which rim

Steel rims have a flange that a knock-on weight grips firmly. Aluminium rims take a separate version with a flatter profile, so the rim flange stays intact. So always check the rim material first, then the weight the wheel balancer calls for. The zinc versions in this range run from 25 to 45 grams.

Reading the weight off the old knock-on weight

Every wheel weight has its weight in grams stamped on it. When you take an old weight off, read that number before you pick up a new one. That way you know exactly which value you need and you do not have to guess. If you are torn between two values, go with the value the wheel balancer shows. A weight that does not seat flat, leave it; you do not clip it onto the rim.

Knock-on weight or adhesive weight

You clip a knock-on weight onto the rim flange and it is on straight away. An adhesive weight goes on the inside of the rim and is less visible. On an aluminium rim with a visible outer flange, many fitters go for adhesive weights. For steel rims and for quick changes, knock-on weights stay the handiest. Keep the common weights of both types in the drawer, then you grab whatever the machine calls for.

Sizes and pack quantities

Knock-on weights come per weight in a bag or box, often in 50s or 100s. Check the pack for how many are inside, then you know whether one will see you through a busy week.
