A mechanical spindle reaches its limit at some point. Replace it with a hydraulic spindle, or fit an auxiliary ram between spindle and shaft, and the same puller delivers up to 10 tonnes — controlled, with less effort, and without letting go suddenly.
When hydraulic pays off
With a mechanical spindle, torque determines pulling force, and you have to supply that torque by hand. Near the tool's upper limit that becomes hard work, and the urge to slip a pipe over the wrench is strong. That is where it goes wrong: the jaw is rated for the tool's force, not for what a metre of leverage produces.
A hydraulic spindle reaches the same tonnage with a few strokes of the pump, and you feel it in the resistance when something is not right. More important still is that the force builds evenly rather than in jerks — which is exactly why hydraulically pulled bearings let go less often.
An auxiliary ram does the same without replacing the spindle: it goes between spindle tip and shaft and supplies the last few tonnes. Useful if you own several puller sizes and want to buy just one hydraulic part.
