Press out rather than strike
A ball joint is clamped into the steering knuckle by a taper. That clamp releases as soon as you put enough pressure on it — which is why the classic two-hammer method also works, but you are then striking parts that were not made for it and the boot rarely survives.
A separator braces on the knuckle and presses the taper out under control. The bell-shaped models surround the joint completely and work even where there is little room from the side; the lever-transmission version delivers high force over a short stroke, which helps in a cramped wheel arch.
Choose on fork opening, not on brand or model year: measure the diameter of the threaded stud or taper the tool has to fit around. 23 mm covers most passenger car work, 29 mm the heavier suspensions and light vans.
