When a bearing sits tight against a shoulder there is no room for a jaw. A separator forces a thin, ground cutting edge between bearing and shoulder and then provides a face to pull against. The Cobra series combines separator and puller in one tool, with a side clamp so the arms cannot spread under load.

When you need a separator
The classic situation: a bearing sits tight against a shaft shoulder or against a gear, and there is not a millimetre of room to get a jaw behind the inner race. In that spot a bigger puller does not help — the problem is access, not force.
A separator solves it with a thin, ground cutting edge that forces its way between bearing and shoulder. The two halves are placed around the shaft and bolted together, creating a flat shoulder for the pulling bridge to act on. It matters that the edge grips behind the inner race and not the outer one, otherwise you push the balls through the raceway.
The Cobra version does both in one tool: the arms separate and pull, and a side clamp holds them in place under load. That saves swapping tools halfway through the job, which is exactly the moment an ordinary separator lets go.
