Choose the right size and drive

You are missing a size in your socket set. Buy a single socket that fits your ratchet or torque wrench. Check the drive size, such as 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Measure the hexagon or twelve-point of the bolt or nut. This ensures the socket grips properly and does not damage the fastener.

Where ordering goes wrong

Many mechanics order a single socket without checking the drive. A socket for 1/2 inch does not fit a ratchet with 3/8 inch. The depth of the socket also matters. A standard socket cannot reach recessed bolts. Choose a deep socket for hard-to-reach points. Measure the bolt size, not the socket you lost.

Profile and quality of the socket

Choose between hexagon and twelve-point. Hexagon grips more securely and prevents rounding. Twelve-point is useful in tight spaces. Pay attention to the hardness of the material. A good socket is hardened and resists deformation under high torque. Use the right socket for the job. This extends the life of your tool.
