Bit sets and bits are essential for screwdriving in the automotive and workshop. With the right bit, you turn screws quickly and without damage. Most bits have a hexagonal shank of 6.3 mm (1/4 inch). This size fits the standard bit holder and many cordless screwdrivers. There are also smaller sizes of 4 mm and larger sizes such as 10 mm for special tools. Always check the drive of your holder to choose a compatible bit.
First look at the profile of the screw head. Measure the diameter or try a few sizes. A bit should fit without play. Too small causes slipping, too big damages the screw. Use a bit gauge or test the bit on a spare screw.
Phillips has a cross-head with a straight slot and an angular shape. Pozidriv has extra ribs between the cross arms and is more resistant to slipping. They are not interchangeable. Use the correct bit to prevent damage. Pozidriv bits often have a notch in the tip.
No, for an impact driver you need impact-rated bits. These are made of harder steel and often have a reinforced shaft. Normal bits can break. Choose bits marked impact and never use excessive torque with a standard bit.
Many bits have a magnetic tip, but not all. A magnetic tip holds the screw and prevents it from falling. Through a magnetic bit holder you can magnetise non-magnetic bits. Some screws are stainless, then a magnet does not work. Use a non-magnetic bit or hold the screw manually.

Determine the right drive
Bits have a hexagon shank that fits into a holder or machine. The most common size is 6.3 mm, also known as 1/4 inch. Smaller sizes, like 4 mm, are used less often. Larger sizes, such as 12.9 mm (1/2 inch), are for heavy-duty tools. Always check the drive of your bit holder or impact driver. A wrong drive causes play and damages the bit. Choose the profile and profile size
The profile determines how the bit grips the screw head. The most common are Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx and hex. Phillips is for cross-head screws, Pozidriv has extra ribs and is often used in furniture. Torx is a star shape that gives lots of grip and less wear. Always use the correct size, such as PH2 or T20. A wrong size causes slipping and rounding of the screw head. A bit set with different profiles and sizes prevents you from having to search for a single bit.
Determine the required length
The length of a bit determines its reach. Short bits of 25 mm are handy in tight spaces. They give less leverage and are more stable when driving straight. For normal screwdriving, use standard bits of chrome-vanadium steel. For impact tools, such as an impact wrench, you need specially hardened bits. These are often black and have a reinforced shank.
