Choose the right socket set
Which drive size fits your work?
Socket sets come in drive sizes from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. For passenger cars and light vans, 1/2 inch is the usual choice. For trucks and heavy equipment, you need 3/4 inch or 1 inch. That way you know the set offers the right sizes for the jobs you do.
What to look for in the number of parts
The number of parts determines which sizes you have on hand as standard. A compact set of 14 parts covers the most common sizes. An extensive set of 46 parts also includes inch sizes and special sockets. Do not choose too small, or you will still have to order individual sockets. Do not choose too large, or you will carry unnecessary weight.
Why the ratchet head matters
The ratchet head determines the minimum swing angle. More teeth give a smaller angle, useful in tight spots. A ratchet with 72 teeth already engages at 5 degrees. That saves time and frustration. Also check that the ratchet has a smooth reversing mechanism and feels solid in your hand.
