Taps
Choosing the right tap depends on the thread size and pitch of the hole. For blind holes, use a taper and bottoming tap set to avoid breakage. The material of your workpiece also plays a role; hardened steel needs a specific tap. A sharp tap ensures a clean thread every time.

Thread Cutting Taps: Choose the Right Set
Size and pitch determine the tap
A tap cuts an internal thread. You choose the tap based on the size and pitch of the hole. Always check the pitch, for example M10 x 1.0 or M10 x 1.25. A wrong pitch gives a poor fit or damages the workpiece.
Taper and plug taps for blind holes
In a blind hole, use a set with a taper tap and a plug tap. The taper tap starts the thread, the plug tap finishes it. Without the plug tap, you will jam or break the tap. For through holes, one tap is enough, but a set gives more control.
Suitable for the workpiece material
Not every tap is suitable for hard steel. Choose a tap that matches the material, for example aluminium or hardened steel. A sharp tap cuts cleanly and requires less force. Replace blunt taps in time, this prevents breakage and damage.
Taps belong to threading tools. If you also cut external threads, see threading dies. For a damaged thread, use thread repair tools. With a tool holder you clamp the tap firmly.
