What to look for when buying

Choose axle stands based on weight and height. The weight capacity is stated per pair. Pick a set that is well above the weight of your vehicle. This gives you enough margin. The height determines whether you can place the stand under your jacking point. Measure the minimum and maximum height of your jacking point and compare it with the stroke of the axle stand.

Working safely with adjustable models

Adjustable axle stands have a locking pin that you place in another hole. Always check that the pin is fully engaged before lowering the vehicle. Use axle stands only in pairs. Place them on level ground. A rubber wheel guard on the stand prevents scratches on your car. Replace a worn guard in time.

Where ordering goes wrong

Check the maximum height of the axle stand. If it is too low, you cannot work comfortably. Also check that the axle stand suits the type of axles on your vehicle. Some models have a wider support plate for larger vehicles. Choose the model that fits your workshop.

You always use axle stands together with a floor jack. If you want to move the vehicle without starting the engine, take a look at positioning aids. For a raised working position without jacking up the car, ramps are a handy alternative.
