Cutting Pliers

Cutting pliers are essential in any workshop. Choose the right type for the material you need to cut. Use a nibbler for sheet metal and cables. For steel rods and bolts, a bolt cutter with hardened jaws is the best choice. The length of the tool determines force and precision. Short pliers up to 200 mm work well in tight spots. Long models up to 600 mm give more leverage and power. Always check the jaw opening to make sure it fits your workpiece. A comfortable grip reduces hand fatigue during extended use.

Buying cutting pliers: what to check

Which version suits your job?

Cutting pliers come in different versions. For thread and cable, use side cutting pliers. For sheet metal and thinner materials, end cutting pliers work well. To cut bolts, choose heavy-duty side cutters or dedicated bolt cutters. The jaws must be hardened. Otherwise they dull quickly and cut poorly.

Length and leverage

The length of the pliers determines the force you apply. Short pliers up to 200 mm are handy for tight spaces. Long pliers give more leverage. That lets you cut thicker material with less effort. But a long tool is harder to manoeuvre. So do not choose bigger than necessary.

Where ordering goes wrong

Check the jaw opening before you order. The workpiece must fit through it exactly. Too small an opening does not grip well. Too large an opening makes the cut inaccurate. Also check the handle. A plastic handle feels comfortable and prevents hand fatigue during prolonged use.

Cutting pliers fall under pliers and often work alongside combination pliers for gripping and bending thread. For cutting sheet metal and cable, use wire stripping and crimping pliers on cable connections, while long nose pliers reach awkward spots with their long, narrow jaws. To clamp sheet metal before you cut, reach for locking pliers.
