Internal or external: which version do you need?

Groove nut sockets come in two versions. The external version grips over the outside of the groove nut. The internal version fits into the recesses of the nut. Look at the groove nut on the axle or differential. That tells you which version you need.

Determine the size and pin count

Measure the diameter of the nut. That determines the socket size. The number of pins must match the number of recesses in the nut. If they don't match, the socket won't grip properly. That damages the nut and the tool.

Drive size and specific applications

Most groove nut sockets have a 1/2 inch drive. Check that your ratchet or torque wrench has that drive size. Some sockets only fit specific axle or differential types. Check the vehicle data before you order. That way you won't end up with the wrong tool.

Groove nut sockets fall under special sockets. If a bolt or nut stays stuck, take a look at extractors. For E-profiles and other unusual heads, go to other special sockets. If you want to loosen a rim lock, use rim lock sockets.
