Choosing the Right Thread Repair Set
Measure first, then choose
Before you order a repair set, measure the pitch and diameter of the damaged thread. Use a thread gauge and a calliper. A set often covers several sizes, for example M5 to M12. Check that your size is included. If not, choose a set for one specific size.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many sets include a tap, inserts and an installation tool. But not every set has a separate drill. Check that before you order. Insert length also matters. An insert that is too short will not grip well in aluminium. An insert that is too long protrudes and blocks the screw.
Material and thread quality
Repair sets work in aluminium and steel. In aluminium, use a stainless steel insert. It distributes the load better than a new thread in the soft material. In steel, a standard insert is fine. Always follow the drill and tap sizes from the set. That gives you a thread as strong as the original.
A repair set depends on the threading tools you use around it. If you cut the new thread by hand, look at taps and threading dies for the right size and pitch. A sturdy tool holder keeps your tap or die in place. For light damage without an insert, you can first try thread files.
