Choose the right hole saw or core drill
Which size and version do you need?
For wood, metal and plastic you use a hole saw. It cuts round holes in sheets up to about 40 mm thick. Core drills are for stone, concrete and tile. They grind through hard material. Measure the pipe or component to set the diameter. Always choose a saw at least 5 mm larger than the outside diameter of what goes through.
Where ordering goes wrong
Check the arbor connection to your drill. Most hole saws take a pilot drill of 6 or 8 mm. Core drills often have a thread or a special holder. Also check the maximum cutting depth. If you cut deeper than the saw rim, the swarf packs and the material gets hot. A pilot drill keeps the saw in place and prevents wandering on smooth surfaces.
Which standard matters for safe work
Always use a carbide-tipped saw for tile and concrete. For wood and plastic a fine-tooth saw is enough. Replace worn saws immediately. A blunt saw breaks or burns the material. Store saws in their original packaging. This keeps the teeth sharp and prevents damage to the cutting edge.
