Which jump starter suits your vehicle?
For a flat battery you have two options: a jump starter or jump cables. A unit with a battery starts independently. A unit with ultra-capacitor technology needs charging from a power source first. Jump cables connect two vehicles. Choose the right amperage for the engine type. For a petrol engine, 200 A is often enough. For a diesel, you need at least 400 A. For an SUV or van, go to 600 A.
What to check when ordering?
Check the length of the cable or unit. A long cable gives more reach, but is heavier. Measure the distance between the batteries. Choose a cable that is long enough. Also check the working temperature. In extreme cold, a unit performs less. A capacitor unit works better at low temperatures than a battery unit. Do you want to hang the unit? Then choose a model with a hanging eye.
Which standard matters?
Jump cables must comply with DIN 72553. This standard guarantees the correct cable cross-section and current capacity. A thicker cable has less voltage drop. That is important with long cables or heavy engines. Units with capacitor technology have no standard, but check the peak current. It must be well above the starting current of your engine.
