How to Choose the Right Ratchet

Drive size sets the scope

A reversible ratchet with a 12.5 mm (1/2") drive is the standard for heavy-duty jobs on wheels and suspension. For small spaces, like around the engine, choose a 6.3 mm (1/4") model. It is more compact and gives you better feel. Always check that the ratchet size matches your sockets. A 10 mm (3/8") ratchet will not fit 1/2" sockets without an adaptor.

Tooth count and swing arc

The number of teeth decides how far you must swing the ratchet back for the next grip. A ratchet with 72 teeth has a swing arc of 5 degrees. That makes work easy in spots where you have little room to move. A 24 tooth ratchet needs a 15 degree stroke. It is fine for straight-line work, but not for the engine bay. Do not buy a 24 tooth ratchet if you work in tight corners often.

Switching direction and handling

A reversible ratchet has a switch to change the turning direction. You do that without removing the socket. Make sure the switch sits firmly and does not slip during work. Some ratchets have a push button on the head for quick socket changes. That saves time when you switch sizes often. Pick a ratchet that feels good in your hand, even with work gloves on.
