Torque Multipliers
A torque multiplier takes low input torque and turns it into high output torque. You can tighten or loosen large bolts with a standard torque wrench or breaker bar. Choose the gear ratio, for instance 1:4, and the maximum torque rating. The drive squares matter: often 1/2" input but also 3/4" or 1" output. Longer models give more reach but need more space. Always secure the reaction bar to counter the twist.

Which version suits your work?
A torque multiplier increases the torque you deliver with a torque wrench or breaker bar. The ratio determines how much torque comes out. Choose 1:4 for regular work on trucks. Heavier versions go up to 1:25 or higher. Also check the maximum torque. It must be well above the required tightening torque. This way you can loosen wheel nuts on trucks or heavy-duty bolts without pneumatic tools.
Where does ordering go wrong?
The drive size is the biggest pitfall. Most torque wrenches have 1/2 inch. But torque multipliers for heavy work often have 3/4 or 1 inch. Always check the size of your existing sockets and wrenches. A wrong size means you cannot connect anything. A long handle gives more reach, but watch the space around the bolt. In a wheel arch there is often less room than you think.
Why the counterstay is essential
A torque multiplier only works properly with the right counterstay. It absorbs the reaction force. Without a counterstay, the housing rotates and no torque reaches the bolt. Always use the support arm or a fixed reaction system. This prevents damage to the tool and to yourself. A torque multiplier is not a replacement for a slide hammer, but it is a safe alternative for heavy loosening and tightening work.
