Ball joint presses: which size and type do you need?

Choose the press based on the diameter

Ball joint presses come as single units for one diameter, usually 20 to 22 mm. Sets include interchangeable adapters and fit multiple cars. Always measure the ball joint or tie rod end taper. The wrong size damages the ball joint or control arm.

Check the connection in mm or inch

The press connection can be metric or imperial. Check this before you order. An inch adapter will not fit a metric spindle and vice versa. Choose a set with both mm and inch adapters if you work on different cars.

Where pressing goes wrong

A ball joint press only works if the fork or adapter sits correctly on the ball joint taper. Always use a counterstay to press the ball joint out of the control arm. The wrong type leads to damage to the bearing or control arm. When in doubt, also replace the tie rod end.
