Choosing a cable reel for your workshop
Which cable reel suits your work?
Cable reels come in various lengths and power ratings. For internal work, a model with IP20 is sufficient. For external use, choose a reel with IP44. It offers better protection against splashes and dust. Also check the cable thickness. A cable of 3 x 1.5 mm² is suitable for most tools up to 3000 W. Heavier equipment needs a thicker cable.
What to consider when ordering?
Measure the distance from your socket to the work area. A cable that is too short limits you; one that is too long takes up space. Count how many sockets you need. Four sockets is common, but two may be enough for a single job. Also check if the reel has a holder for hanging. This lets you safely hang the reel on a hook or scaffold.
Why IP rating and power matter
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit indicates dust resistance, the second water resistance. IP20 is dust-tight but not watertight. IP44 is splashproof and suitable for outdoor use. The maximum power is marked on the reel. Do not exceed it. An overloaded cable gets hot and can melt. Always choose a reel that matches the power of your tool.
