Spark Plug Tools
Choose a spark plug tool that fits your car. Check the hex size, often 16 mm or 21 mm. The drive is usually 3/8 or 1/2 inch. For deep plug wells, use a universal joint or a T-handle with a ball joint. A torque-limiting version helps you tighten to the exact spec. This protects the plug and the threads.

Spark Plug Tools: Sizes and Types
Spark Plug Tools: Sizes and Types
Spark plug tools come in different across flats sizes. The most common are 16 and 21 millimetres. Always check the across flats size of your spark plug before you order. The wrong size damages the plug or the socket.
What about hard-to-reach plug wells?
For hard-to-reach plug wells, choose a model with a universal joint or a T-handle with a ball hinge. It bends and reaches plugs that sit at an angle. A straight wrench only works when the plug is right on top.
Why choose a model with torque limit?
You do not want to overtighten a spark plug. That damages the thread in the cylinder head. A spark plug tool with a torque limiter clicks at the right moment. This keeps the thread and the plug intact.
This tool belongs with Engine & Attachments. For damaged threads, see Spark Plug Thread Repair, for glow plugs in diesel engines look at Glow Plug Tools, and for work around ignition and injectors there is Petrol & Diesel Injectors.
