Torque Wrenches
Choose a torque wrench based on its torque range, drive size, and accuracy. The target torque should be in the middle of the range. Drive sizes from 1/4 to 3/4 inch fit most sockets. A ratchet with more teeth reduces the swing angle, perfect for tight spaces. Consider the length for leverage and whether the wrench has a hanging loop. Choosing the Right Torque Wrench
Torque range and drive size
Start with the torque range you need. The target torque should fall within the range, ideally in the middle. This gives you the best accuracy. Then choose the drive size. 1/4 inch fits small sockets, 1/2 inch is standard for cars. 3/4 inch is for trucks and heavy work.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many mechanics order a torque wrench with too large a range. Then they use the lower part of the scale. Accuracy is worse there. Also check the length of the wrench. A long wrench gives more leverage but may not fit everywhere. Measure the space you work in.
Ratchet head and accuracy
A ratchet head with many teeth moves in small steps. That helps in tight spots. Also look at accuracy. The DIN ISO 6789 standard divides wrenches into classes. A class A wrench is more accurate than class B. For engine rebuilding you need class A; for wheel nuts class B is fine.
