Adapters
A socket adaptor links a ratchet to a socket with a different drive size. Choose the inner and outer square drives, for example 3/8" socket on a 1/2" ratchet. Remember: the female end fits the ratchet, the male end drives the socket. Pick hardened chrome vanadium steel to avoid deformation under load. An adaptor alters the leverage, so do not exceed normal force.

Choosing the right socket adaptor
Internal and external square drive
A socket adaptor connects a ratchet to a socket with a different drive size. The internal square drive fits on the ratchet. The external square drive fits in the socket. You choose the size of both squares. This lets you use 3/8 inch sockets on a 1/2 inch ratchet.
Where ordering goes wrong
Sizes are always listed as internal and external. An adaptor from 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) to 10 mm (3/8 inch) does not work the other way round. Check both sizes before you order. A wrong size means a return.
Choose hardened steel
An adaptor must transfer force without deforming. Hardened steel does this. A soft adaptor can round off or break under high force. That damages your socket and your workpiece. An adaptor changes the leverage. Do not turn harder than normal.
An adaptor rarely works on its own. You fit it straight onto a ratchet, and with an extension you reach places your handle cannot. Where a straight handle will not fit, a universal joint or a flexible handle helps. Everything you need for this is in ratchets and extensions.
