Universal Joints
Joints, also called universal joints or cardan couplings, transfer the drive from your ratchet to a socket at awkward angles. Choose the drive size that matches your ratchet: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4". Pay attention to the material; chrome vanadium steel lasts long, and a chrome-plated finish resists rust. Some versions have a hanging hole, handy for workshop walls. Make sure you get the right size, otherwise your socket won't fit securely and you'll slip.

Which size do you need?
Universal joints come in four drive sizes: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4". The size must match your ratchet and sockets. If you use a 1/2" ratchet, choose a universal joint with a 1/2" drive. A wrong size causes play. Your socket can come off while turning.
What to check when ordering?
Check if the universal joint has a spring. That keeps the socket on the joint. Without a spring, the socket slips off easily, especially when working overhead. Some versions have a hanging loop. That is handy for storage in the workshop. Choose a version with a pin or retaining ring that fits securely.
Which quality matters?
Universal joints made of chrome vanadium steel are strong and last long. A chrome-plated finish protects against rust. That is important in a damp workshop. Cheaper versions of ordinary steel can bend or break under high torque. Invest in a solid joint, then you work safely and accurately.
A universal joint rarely works on its own. Also look at the ratchets and extensions for the full range, choose a ratchet that matches your drive size, bridge extra distance with an extension and change size with an adapter.
