The bore diameter determines the size and number of arms you need. For small bores, use a two-arm hone; for large ones, a three-arm hone. The abrasive type and grit size of the stones set the surface roughness. Also check the maximum RPM and the stone length. This gives you a perfect fit for your new piston.

The right size and number of arms

For a new piston, the cylinder wall must be perfectly round and smooth. That is why you hone the cylinder to size. First measure the diameter of the bore. For small bores, use a hone with two arms. For large bores, choose one with three arms. The jaws must hold the stones securely. Check that the range of the tool matches your cylinder diameter.

Grit and length of the stones

The grit size determines the surface finish. A coarse grit removes more material. A fine grit gives a smooth finish. Choose the grit that suits the condition of your cylinder. The length of the stones also matters. Short stones work in small bores. Long stones give a more even result in large cylinders.

Watch the speed

Do not exceed the maximum speed of the hone. Too high a speed damages the surface. It can also overheat the stones. Work slowly and evenly. This gives a perfect fit for your new piston. Proper preparation prevents wear and premature engine failure.
