Floor Jacks & Axle Stands
A floor jack lifts the vehicle, axle stands keep it secure. Choose a capacity that matches at least the vehicle's weight. Check the minimum and maximum height. A hydraulic jack lifts smoothly, but always place axle stands before working underneath. Look at the saddle surface and the base footprint for stability on uneven floors.

Floor Jacks & Axle Stands: Safe Lifting
Floor jacks and axle stands for the workshop
A jack lifts the vehicle, axle stands hold the weight. Choose a capacity at least equal to the vehicle weight. Also check the minimum and maximum height. That way you know the jack fits underneath and the stands can carry the load.
Floor jacks: trolley jack or bottle jack
Floor jacks are chosen by weight and lifting height. A trolley jack is manoeuvrable and ideal for daily use. The hydraulic pump lifts smoothly and controlled. Bottle jacks lift higher but are less stable in use. Use a jack only for lifting, not for supporting.
Axle stands: carrying the weight safely
Axle stands hold the vehicle at height while you work underneath. The capacity is stated per pair. Choose a set well above your vehicle weight. The adjustable version adapts to the required height. Check the width of the support points; they must suit the shape of your vehicle.
Ramps and positioning aids
Ramps go under the wheels and you drive the car onto them. This gives a raised working position without a jack. Choose a capacity suitable for your vehicle. Positioning aids move a stationary car without the engine. They fit under the wheels or lift the vehicle. Handy for positioning in the workshop.
Choice guide for the job
For a quick job on wheels or brakes, ramps are enough. To work under the vehicle, use a jack with axle stands. To move a car without starting it, choose a positioning aid. Also look at workshop equipment for more gear.
