For gasket removal, choose a scraper with a rigid blade. For general work, a universal scraper works well. You look for a blade wide enough and a comfortable grip. A rubber grip absorbs force during tough jobs. Replaceable blades extend the tool's life. Check the blade size so it fits the handle. Stubborn residues need a longer scraper for more leverage.

Choosing the right scraper for the job
What size do you need?
Choose the scraper based on the job. For gaskets on cylinder heads and sumps, use a wide blade of 20 mm or more. It spreads the force and damages the surface less. For tight corners and gaps, a narrow 12 mm blade is enough. Always measure the blade width you need.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many scrapers have replaceable blades. These blades are not universal. The size and fixing system vary by brand. Check that the replacement blade fits the holder of your scraper. A rubber handle absorbs vibration during heavy work. Without a rubber handle, you will soon get blisters on your hands.
When to choose a long scraper?
For heavy-duty residue in hard-to-reach places, use a long scraper. It gives more leverage and you need less force. A short scraper is more manoeuvrable and suitable for precision work. Choose the length that fits the space you work in.
A scraper belongs with your hand tools in the workshop. If you would rather cut than prise, take a look at knives & shears. To loosen seized parts, reach for hammers or hooks & pin wrenches, and use measuring tools to determine the blade size.
