Which size or version do you choose?
Measuring tools for daily work on cars start with a 150 mm caliper. That length is enough for brake discs and bearings. Digital versions show the size directly on a screen. Analogue models work without a battery and are more robust. Choose a digital version if you often measure different sizes. An analogue caliper is fine for simple checks.
Where it goes wrong when ordering
Pay attention to the measuring range and accuracy. A 150 mm caliper covers most brake discs and bearings. Larger sizes are needed for truck parts, but they do not fit in the standard tool trolley. Also check the readout: digital in millimetres or inches, analogue with a vernier. A digital caliper needs an LR44 battery. It is not always included in the box. Order one straight away.
Which standard matters for measuring tools
For calipers, DIN 862 applies. That standard guarantees that the measurement is reliable within the stated tolerance. Measuring tools without a standard number are unsuitable for precision work on brakes and bearings. Store your instrument dry and dust-free. A storage box protects against dirt and knocks.
