Which size or type suits your job?
For coil springs and MacPherson struts, use a spring compressor. It clamps the spring safely. Valve spring compressors are for valves in the cylinder head. Piston ring compressors squeeze the rings together during fitting. Chain tensioners keep the chain taut. Universal spreaders work on flanges and struts. Choose the size that matches the diameter of the part.
Where ordering goes wrong
Always check the opening width and the depth of the jaws. A spreader or compressor that is too small will not fit. One that is too large will not grip properly and can slip. For strut and steering parts, use a spreader with the right size for the bolt. Measure the bolt or part diameter before you order. That prevents returns.
Why the right standard matters
Spring compressors and spreaders must handle force without deforming. Tools that meet the relevant standards are tested for strength and safety. Never use a damaged or worn tool. It can be dangerous. Choose a tool you trust and that does the job safely.
