Timing Belts, V-Belts & Multi-V-Belts
You replace a timing, V, or multi-V belt on profile and length. A V-belt is trapezoid. A multi-V belt has ribs. A timing belt has teeth. Measure the old belt or compare the OEM number. Use the correct tensioner tool with the right spanner size. A wrong choice slips or does not fit.

The right belt for your engine
Profile and length determine the choice
A V-belt is trapezoidal and runs in a V-groove. A multi-V belt has ribs and grips several pulleys. A timing belt has teeth on the internal side and drives the camshaft. You replace a belt by profile and length. Measure the old belt or compare the OEM number. That ensures the new belt fits.
Where ordering goes wrong
A belt that is a few millimetres off will slip or not fit. Always check the length and the number of teeth on a timing belt. A multi-V belt needs the correct number of ribs. Also look at the form of the pulleys. A wrong choice damages the drive. When in doubt, use the old belt as a model.
Tool for the replacement
Use the right tool to replace a belt. A tensioner wrench with the correct across flats loosens the tensioner. Some engines need a special wrench. Check the across flats and the model of the tensioner. With the proper tool you replace the belt without damaging the pulleys or the tensioner.
This tool belongs with Engine & Attachments. If you set the belt to time, you also need the tool from Engine Timing. For work on injectors and fuel lines nearby, look at Petrol & Diesel Injectors and Fuel System. If something does not fit straight away, Other Special Tools often has the answer.
