Choosing the Right Air Inflator

Pick the right version

You inflate tyres with compressed air. The air inflator sits between the compressor and the tyre valve. The main difference is the maximum working pressure, from 8 to 16 bar. Choose an inflator that matches the pressure your workshop needs. Also check the gauge type. Analogue is robust and easy to read. Digital gives a more precise reading, but can be more sensitive to dirt and moisture.

Calibrated or not

For official tyre checks, such as during an MOT test, a calibrated air inflator is mandatory. That version meets the requirements for measuring instruments. If you only inflate tyres for customers, a non-calibrated version is sufficient. Remember: a calibrated gauge needs periodic recalibration. Factor that into your maintenance schedule.

Mounting and hose

Most air inflators hang on a bracket or stand. That leaves both hands free while you work. The hose is a consumable part. With daily use, it wears out or gets damaged. A spare hose is easy to replace. Choose a hose with the right length for your workspace. Too long causes pressure loss, too short limits your reach.

An air inflator belongs with your air tools and works best with the right hoses and air tool accessories. Blow dirt and swarf away with an air blow gun before you connect the valve.
