Engine oil
Engine oil is vital for your engine's life. Choose by viscosity, such as 5W-30 or 10W-40, and the manufacturer spec. Petrol and diesel engines need different oils, especially with DPF or turbo. You can select mineral, semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic. Too thin or thick oil increases wear. Always check the owner's manual.

Viscosity and specification
Engine oil comes in different viscosities, such as 5W-30 or 10W-40. The first numbers indicate cold start behaviour, the second the thickness at operating temperature. Always check your vehicle handbook. It states which viscosity and specification the manufacturer requires. The specification, such as ACEA or API, is just as important as the viscosity. The wrong specification can cause damage, even if the viscosity is correct.
Petrol, diesel, DPF and turbo
Petrol and diesel engines have different oil requirements. Diesel engines with a diesel particulate filter need a low-SAPS oil to prevent the filter from clogging. Turbos run hot and need an oil that remains stable at high temperatures. Modern engines with direct injection often require an oil with a lower ash content. So look not only at the engine type, but also at the presence of a DPF or turbo.
Mineral, semi-synthetic or fully synthetic
The base oil determines the quality. Mineral oil suits older engines without high demands. Semi-synthetic oil is a blend and offers a middle ground. Fully synthetic oil is best for modern engines and extreme conditions. It provides better protection during cold starts and at high temperatures. If you choose the wrong base oil, the oil can age faster. That increases wear. Always check what the manufacturer recommends.
Engine oil sits under oil and lubricants, together with the other lubricants for the workshop. If your vehicle shifts roughly, also look at transmission oil based on the factory specification. For cooling and protecting your engine, antifreeze and coolant is the logical addition. If you work with a vehicle lift, hydraulic oil keeps it running smoothly and reliably.
