Which version suits your job?
A leak detector works in three ways: ultrasonic, smoke or vacuum. Ultrasonic finds leaks in closed systems, such as air conditioning or vacuum lines. A smoke generator works well on cooling systems and fuel tanks. A vacuum pump tests the seal of systems under pressure or vacuum. Choose the version that matches the medium you check: air, gas or liquid.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many mechanics order a leak detector without checking the medium. As a result, the detector does not work on liquid systems or is not sensitive enough for small leaks. Always check whether the device suits your application. An ultrasonic detector is quick, but not suitable for open systems. A smoke generator finds even small leaks, but requires a sealed system.
Why the standard matters
Leak detection has no fixed standards for all systems. However, the device must meet the requirements of the system you test. For air conditioning, use a leak detector suitable for refrigerant. For vacuum lines, you need a vacuum pump with a gauge. Check the specifications of the leak detector, such as measuring range and sensitivity. This prevents you from buying a device that does not do what you need.
