What coating thickness gauges are for
A coating thickness gauge measures the thickness of paint or powder coating on a metal panel. You use it to check whether a car has been resprayed, or whether a coating sits within tolerance. Most gauges work on ferrous metals such as steel. For aluminium or stainless steel you choose a non-ferrous version. A universal model measures both, which helps when you do not know what is under the paint.
Where ordering goes wrong
The most common mistake: ordering a ferrous model while you also measure aluminium panels. You get no reading or an unreliable one. If you are unsure about the substrate, take a universal model. Measuring temperature alongside paint thickness is a job for thermometers.
