When choosing, consider the IP rating for dust and water resistance, the working temperature range, and the battery type or capacity. Which version suits your inspection?
Borescopes differ in camera head diameter, cable or hose length, and image quality. An 8 mm head fits through most spark plug holes and injector ports. For smaller openings, choose a model with a 5.5 mm head or thinner. The cable must be long enough to reach deep cylinders or pipes. Always measure the access path and the opening before you order.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many mechanics only look at camera quality and forget the protection rating. A borescope without a good IP rating won't survive moisture or dust. Check the IP rating of the camera and the housing. For work in engine bays, at least IP67 is recommended. Also consider the working temperature. In a hot engine bay, a cheap camera can fail quickly.
Why battery life and battery type matter
An inspection often takes longer than you expect. Choose a model with a battery that lasts at least a few hours. Some borescopes run on disposable batteries, others have a built-in rechargeable battery. Think about whether you can recharge on site or need spare batteries. Long battery life prevents you from being left without an image mid-diagnosis.
A borescope is one of the test devices that complete a workshop. If you want to measure pressure as well as see inside, look at engine, oil pressure and multimeters & voltage testers. Batteries are essential for powering your equipment, and with a leak detector you trace leaks that the camera alone will not find.
