What to consider when ordering
First check the type of gas you want to trace. If the gas is not in the specifications, the detector will not work. If you work on air conditioning systems, choose a model that also detects refrigerant. Look at the sensitivity in ppm. The lower the number, the smaller the leak you can find. An alarm with an adjustable threshold prevents false alarms in a dirty workshop.
Why calibration matters
A gas detector loses accuracy over time. Have the meter calibrated every year. Use a test gas that matches the target gas. Without calibration you miss small leaks. That costs time and can be dangerous. Choose a model with a clear calibration indicator. Then you know the meter is reliable.
A gas detector belongs with the test devices in your workshop. If you are tracing a leak in a closed system, a leak detector complements it. For air conditioning choose air conditioning test devices, and check voltage with multimeters and voltage testers.
