Ratchet Handles

Selecting a ratchet handle starts with the drive size: 1/4 inch for light work, 3/8 inch for general tasks, or 1/2 inch for heavy duty. The number of teeth determines the return arc; more teeth allow access in tight spots. Consider the handle style, fixed or pivoting, and length, which affects leverage. Match the tool to the space you have. A comfortable grip prevents fatigue during prolonged use.

Buying Ratchet Handles: Size, Teeth and Type

Size and drive determine your choice

You choose a ratchet handle according to the work you do. The drive size decides which socket you use. 1/4 inch is for light work, 3/8 inch for medium jobs and 1/2 inch for heavy-duty tasks. Also check the length of the handle. A longer handle gives more leverage, but it does not fit everywhere.

Teeth and swing angle

The number of teeth determines the swing angle. More teeth mean a smaller angle, which is handy in tight spaces. Choose at least 72 teeth for work near bodywork or in the engine bay. With 90 or 120 teeth you can turn with only a small movement.

Handle design and comfort

The handle is either fixed or swivelling. A swivelling head reaches awkward places, but it is less strong. A fixed handle is more robust and suitable for heavy work. Pay attention to comfort in your hand, especially during long use. A rubber or ergonomic grip feels better.

Choose the right type of ratchet

For general workshop work, choose a reversible ratchet. It has a switch that lets you turn left or right. Pay attention to the drive size and the number of teeth. A 1/2 inch ratchet belongs with heavy jobs. For small spaces, choose a 1/4 inch or a telescopic version.

Where a screwdriver falls short, use a bit ratchet. It combines a ratchet head with a bit holder. You can reach nuts and screws in tight engine bays. Special ratchets with a spinner handle or ball end give more leverage or reach difficult angles.

For scaffolding or heavy outdoor use, there are scaffolding ratchets. These are double-ended and have two across flats sizes per piece. They tighten scaffolding couplers quickly and firmly. The sizes range from 17 to 30 mm.

You can repair worn ratchets with a repair set. This lets you replace the internal parts of the ratchet head. That way you avoid throwing away expensive tools. Choose the set that fits your model and drive size.

Not sure between two types? Look at the space and the force you need. For heavy work, a reversible ratchet with a 1/2 inch drive is the safe choice. For precision work in awkward places, choose a bit ratchet or a special ratchet with a spinner handle.
