Why you need a special oil filter wrench
Modern cars use filter housings with a specific profile. A standard wrench will not grip them properly. Special oil filter wrenches have 6, 12 or 16 points, or teeth that match the housing exactly. You identify the right version by the make and model of the car. Always check the year, because manufacturers change profiles.
How to avoid damaging the filter housing
The wrong size damages a plastic filter housing. That often means a new housing and extra cost. Measure the diameter of the housing or compare the OEM part number. The wrench should slide over the profile without play. If you are unsure, choose a set with multiple sizes, it covers more models.
Working in tight spaces
Some filter housings sit deep or at an awkward angle. For those you need a long version or one that works with a ratchet. A socket with an extension bar often works best. That way you remove the housing without taking off other parts. Always use a torque wrench when refitting a stuck housing.
