Choosing the right oil filter wrench
What size do you need?
An oil filter wrench with three arms clamps around the filter. You adjust the diameter to the filter you need to remove. Always check the range of the wrench. If the filter does not fit within the range, the wrench will slip off. Measure the filter diameter before you order.
Where ordering goes wrong
Many mechanics choose a wrench that is too large or too small. A small wrench does not clamp properly and damages the filter. A large wrench spins without grip. Choose a version that covers the range you encounter in the workshop. Passenger cars and commercial vehicles require different sizes.
Why a universal wrench
A universal oil filter wrench replaces several fixed wrenches. You use it for filters of different diameters. That saves space in the toolbox. Make sure the arms clamp firmly and the wrench does not deform under load. That way you can remove even a stubborn filter without damage.
These wrenches fall under Oil Service. If you have a specific filter housing, look at special oil filter wrenches. For a steel band around the filter, choose an oil filter strap wrench, and for even more grip an oil filter pliers or oil filter chain wrench. Catch the oil neatly with a drain receiver.
