Car Body Repair

Choose the right tool for your body repair job. Filler knives come in spring steel with widths from 50 to 120 mm. A sanding block of 105x210 mm keeps paper flat. Dent removal sets include several parts for different dents. Check the head weight and handle type of a body hammer. A hanging hole is useful for storage. The number of parts in a set determines whether you can work alone.

Car Body Repair: Choose the Right Tool

Which size and type do you need?

For car body repair, the job determines which tool you choose. Filler spreaders are available in widths from 50 to 120 mm. Choose a wide spreader for large surfaces and a narrow one for corners. Sanding blocks of 105 x 210 mm keep the sandpaper flat. This ensures even sanding and prevents uneven spots.

Where does ordering go wrong?

Many mechanics only look at the number of parts in a set. But the form of the tool matters just as much. A dent removal set only works well if the hammers and puller match each other. Pay attention to the weight of the hammer and the type of grip. A hanging loop on the handle is practical for the workshop. Check whether the set includes a counterstay. Without a counterstay, you cannot pull dents out tightly enough.

Which standard matters?

There is no specific DIN standard for body hammers and filler spreaders. But the quality of the steel determines how long the tool lasts. Choose hammers with heads of hardened steel and blades of spring steel. They do not bend and stay sharp. This lets you work accurately and safely on bodies.

This tool belongs with Body & Interior. For removing dents without painting, look at Smart Repair (PDR). If a disc has to come out or go in, you need Fitting and Removing Discs. And for taking trims and panels off neatly, use Trims and Panels.
