Oil Filter Wrenches & Covers
To remove an oil filter you need an oil filter wrench or cap. Choose the correct size based on the diameter and profile of the filter housing. Count the number of corners, often 12, 14 or 15. Also check the drive size for your ratchet, usually 1/2 inch. With the right combination you can tighten and loosen the filter without damage.

Choosing the right oil filter wrench
Determine the correct size
An oil filter wrench or cap must fit the filter housing exactly. Measure the diameter of the filter and count the number of flats. This is often 12, 14 or 15. The wrong size will damage the filter housing. Always check the specifications for your car.
Connection to your ratchet
Most oil filter wrenches have a square drive of 1/2 inch. Some use an external profile for a socket. Check which connection your ratchet has. This lets you remove and tighten the filter without damage. A combination of a wrench and a cap can be useful for different cars.
Where ordering goes wrong
Do not order blindly by brand. An oil filter wrench for an Audi will not automatically fit a Mini. The diameter and the number of flats determine the right choice. Measure the filter or look up the type in the manual. This prevents buying a wrench that does not fit.
These wrenches and caps are part of oil service. If the filter housing does not match a fixed size, look at special oil filter wrenches, oil filter strap wrenches, oil filter chain wrenches or oil filter pliers. Catch the oil neatly with a drain receiver.
