Stud Extractors

A broken stud cannot resist a stud extractor. Choose the size that matches the stud diameter, usually 6 to 12 mm. The extractor has a reverse thread that bites into a drilled hole. Turn it with a ratchet or torque wrench using the 12.5 mm (1/2") square drive. Select a single unit or a set for multiple sizes. Hardened steel keeps edges sharp. Check the diameter when ordering.

Which size do you need?

A stud extractor removes broken studs from engines or manifolds. Measure the diameter of the broken stud to select the right size. Common sizes range from 6 to 19 mm. Pick an extractor slightly smaller than the drilled hole. The fine thread then grips the stud firmly.

What to check when ordering

Check the drive connection. Most extractors have a 12.5 mm (1/2") square drive for a ratchet or torque wrench. Some versions have a smaller hexagon for use in a drill. Choose a single extractor for one specific size or a set for multiple diameters. A set saves money if you often work with different studs.

Why hardened steel matters

The teeth must be hard enough to cut into the stud without slipping. Hardened steel prevents the teeth from breaking under high torque. Always centre punch the stud and start with a small pilot hole. This keeps the extractor centred and working reliably.

A stud extractor belongs with hand tools, alongside the tools you use around it. To tighten and loosen nuts, reach for spanners or ratchet wrenches.
