Choosing the Right Pipe Cutter
Outside diameter and material determine your choice
Always measure the outside diameter of the pipe. Every pipe cutter has a maximum cutting capacity. Choose a model that suits the diameters you often work with. Copper and aluminium cut with a standard blade. For stainless steel you need a carbide version. A standard blade dulls quickly on harder material.
Ratchet mechanism for tight spaces
A ratchet mechanism lets you operate the cutter in small angles. You do not have to turn the tool fully around the pipe each time. That works well in awkward spots, for example pipes close to a wall. Without a ratchet you need more room to turn.
Consider parts and accessories
Replacement blades and other parts are available separately. Check that the blade for your pipe cutter is obtainable. Some models use a specific blade. A good pipe cutter lasts long if you replace the blade in time. Store the tool in a dry place.
