Choose the right capacity

Drain receivers catch old oil cleanly during an oil change. The capacity determines how often you need to empty them. For a single oil change, a small 10 to 20 litre container is enough. For larger volumes, such as with trucks or machinery, choose a mobile unit of 60 litres or more. Remember: a full receiver is heavy. Make sure you can lift or move it safely.

Check the height and access

The height of the receiver is crucial. If you work under a car or vehicle lift, measure the clearance. Some models are low enough to slide under a car. Others can be hung from the car or lift. This lets you work directly under the drain plug without bending. Also check the diameter and length of the hose. A hose that is too short makes it difficult to reach the drain plug.

Plastic or metal

The material determines durability. Plastic is light and rust-free, but less resistant to heat and sharp objects. Metal is stronger and can take a knock. Choose plastic for daily use with engine oil. Choose metal for heavy oil or if you often work with sharp parts. Also check the seal of the receiver. A good seal prevents leaks during transport.

A drain receiver alone is not enough for a complete oil service. Also consider an oil pump to move the oil out of the receiver, a filling aid for topping up engine and gearbox oil, and an oil drain wrench to undo the drain plug neatly.
