Shape and application

Choose the file that matches the shape of your workpiece. Flat files are for flat surfaces. Half-round files follow curves. Round files work in holes and recesses. For precision work, use needle files. Diamond files cut through hardened steel. This way you always have the right tool at hand.

Cut and length

The cut determines how coarse or fine you work. A coarse cut removes material quickly. A fine cut gives a smoother surface. The length of the file determines the stroke range. Choose a longer file for large surfaces. A shorter file gives more control. Also check the handle. A good handle feels comfortable in your hand.

Single file or complete set

A complete set contains multiple files in a case. You can hang that case on the wall. This keeps all shapes and cuts within reach. For general workshop work, a set is handy. If you have only one specific job, choose a single file. This prevents you from paying for more than you need.

Files belong with the hand tools in your workshop. If you want to prepare a hole before filing, take a look at drills. For finishing and smoothing metal, combine a file with grinding and polishing. To hold your workpiece while you file, use pliers or a vice. If you cut a thread first, threading tools belong with it.
