12V tools are suitable for light tasks such as driving screws into soft materials. 18V delivers more torque and power, needed for heavy jobs like drilling into steel or undoing large nuts. Choose the voltage that matches most work you do.
Battery capacity in ampere-hours determines runtime. For occasional use, a 2Ah battery is fine. To work continuously for long periods, choose 4Ah or more. Be aware that a larger battery adds weight and makes the tool less balanced.
If the tool emits more than 85 dB(A), hearing protection is a legal requirement. Use ear plugs or muffs that reduce noise by at least 20 dB. Check the noise reduction rating on the package before you buy.
Induction heaters work on ferromagnetic metals like steel and iron. Aluminium and copper cannot be heated this way. If you work on an aluminium component, alternative methods are needed. Coils come in various diameters to fit the fastener.
The lifespan of a lithium-ion battery depends on charge cycles. On average, it lasts 500 to 1000 cycles. Charge the battery when it is nearly empty and store it in a cool, dry place. This extends its service life.

Choose the right voltage
Cordless tools run on lithium-ion batteries. The nominal voltage determines the torque. For light screwdriving, a 12V battery is sufficient. Heavy-duty jobs such as loosening wheel bolts require 18V or more. Batteries and chargers differ per system. Choose one system for all cordless machines. Battery capacity and runtime
Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours (Ah). A higher Ah means a longer runtime. A 4Ah battery provides twice the power duration of a 2Ah one. Consider the extra weight. For quick jobs, a smaller battery is fine. For intensive use, choose a larger capacity. This keeps your workflow uninterrupted.
Noise and safety
Power and cordless tools produce noise that can damage your hearing. The sound pressure level is listed in the specifications, in decibels (dB(A)). Above 85 dB(A), hearing protection is mandatory. Invest in good hearing protection. In a small workshop, sound reflects more intensely. Take adequate measures.
The application determines the machine
Besides drilling and screwing, there are specialist tools. An induction heater heats rusty bolts so they come loose, without an open flame. For drilling in metal or wood, use a drill. For electronics and small repairs, choose soldering and hot glue tools. Extend your power supply safely with a cable reel. Check the plugs and bushings of fixed equipment for voltage and current.
