Which size or type you need
Choose a screw punch or hollow punch for holes in sheet metal, rubber and gaskets. The size determines the hole diameter. An arch punch also works in places where a standard hollow punch cannot reach. For broken bolts and studs, use a bolt extractor or stud extractor. They come in different sizes to fit the thread you need to remove.
Where ordering goes wrong
Always measure the diameter of the bolt or stud. A too-small extractor will not grip properly and slips. A too-large one damages the surrounding material. Also check the shape of the punch. A hollow punch with a straight cutting edge is for flat sheet. An arch punch has a curved shape and is for round or hard-to-reach surfaces. Make sure the punch suits the material you work on, such as rubber or gasket.
Which standard matters
For extractors and punches, no universal standard guarantees quality. Look at the hardness of the material and the sharpness of the cutting edge. A good punch is hardened and stays sharp for a long time. An extractor must be made of alloy steel to withstand high forces. Choose a tool you can use with a hammer or with a ratchet, depending on the space available. This prevents you from buying the wrong tool and not finishing the job.
This tool belongs with the tools you need in every workshop. For pulling bearings, gears and pulleys off their shaft, use a puller. Broken bolts and nuts are best tackled with speciality tools for cars. A spare part such as a new spindle or cutting edge keeps your punch or extractor ready for use.
