Certified tools carry the marking DIN EN 60900. The handle often shows the maximum voltage and a double-square symbol. Also look for the words 'insulated' and the manufacturer's logo. These marks confirm compliance with the standard.

Electric vehicle batteries often operate at 400 volts or more. Insulated tools to DIN EN 60900 are suitable for such systems. However, always follow the safety instructions from the vehicle manufacturer. Only trained personnel should work on high-voltage systems.

Working safely on live parts

The DIN EN 60900 standard requires the insulation to withstand 10,000 volts per stroke. Never use standard tools on live parts. Even at low voltage, things can go wrong.

Sockets, ratchets and extensions

For turning bolts and nuts, use insulated socket bits or an insulated ratchet. The drive determines which sockets you use. Versions have a square drive of 6.3 mm (1/4 inch), 10 mm (3/8 inch) or 12.5 mm (1/2 inch). With insulated extensions you can also reach recessed bolts. Choose the length that fits the location where you work.

Screwdrivers, spanners and pliers

For screw connections, use insulated screwdrivers with a flat, Phillips or Torx profile. The insulation runs right up to the tip. For open connections, insulated spanners are suitable. They come as open-end, ring or combination spanners. The across flats range from 6 to 32 millimetres. For cutting, crimping or gripping wires, use insulated pliers. Make sure the handles have full insulation.
