Which version do you need?
For a quick voltage check on 6-24 V systems, a simple voltage tester is enough. It shows whether voltage is present, without deeper measuring. For battery voltage, sensors or wiring, use a digital multimeter. It measures voltage, current and resistance. Choose the measuring range that fits your daily jobs. A multimeter with auto-ranging prevents errors.
What to check when ordering?
Check if the tester suits your vehicles. For cars, a range up to 600 V AC/DC is common. For trucks or 24 V systems, you need a tester that handles that. Look at the safety category, like CAT III. It indicates which overvoltages the device withstands. If you measure high voltage, choose a tester with a higher CAT rating. Test leads and probes are sometimes not included. Buy them separately or as a set.
Which functions matter?
Continuity test is handy for checking cables and fuses. Diode test helps find faulty rectifiers. Resistance measurement is used for sensors and heating elements. Some multimeters have frequency or temperature measurement. Those are not needed for every job. Choose only what your workshop really uses. A sturdy housing and a clear display make work more comfortable.
