Frequently asked questions about Workshop Equipment

Answers to the most common questions from our customers

Measure the outer diameter of the filter. Choose a band wrench with a range that covers this size, for example 20 to 190 mm. Also check the width of the band. It must fully surround the filter. A rubber band gives more grip and prevents damage. Make sure the wrench grips firmly before you turn it.

A band wrench uses a steel or rubber strap that tightens around the filter. It distributes force evenly and damages the filter less. A chain wrench uses a chain that you pull tight. The chain grips point-wise, which helps in tight spaces. But it leaves marks more easily. For standard use a band wrench is safer.

Find out the number of flanks and the outer size of the filter profile. This is often in the service manual or online. You measure the distance between two opposite flat sides. For a 14-flank socket that is for example 84 mm. Also check the drive. The most common is a square opening of 1/2 inch. If unsure, compare with the old socket.

The dipstick must fit exactly to the engine type. Length and shape of the cap determine if it seals well. A wrong length gives an incorrect level. Choose stainless steel, which resists corrosion. Check if the dipstick has a hanging hole. Then you can hang it and avoid confusion.

Universal band wrenches fit filters with different diameters. They suit many cars but not every model. Special sockets are necessary when the filter head has a unique profile, like some Mercedes or Peugeot engines. Use the specific socket then. A universal wrench might not fit or grip well.

Workshop Equipment: Choose the Right Tool

Workshop equipment for every job

This category contains all the tools you need in and around the workshop. From oil filter wrenches and jacks to lighting and chemicals. Everything is organised by application, so you quickly find what you are looking for.

Lifting and supporting

For lifting vehicles and heavy parts, choose from floor jacks and axle stands and engine lifters, cross-beams and cranes. A jack lifts, an axle stand holds the weight. Choose a capacity at least equal to the vehicle weight. For an engine hoist or crane, first determine the maximum capacity and the free height above the vehicle.

Oil changes and tyre work

For an oil service you need an oil filter wrench. These come in strap, chain and socket versions, for filter diameters from 60 to 190 mm. Choose the version that fits the filter on your vehicle. For tyre work, use tyre levers. Short levers work in tight spaces, long ones give more force. Choose plastic or stainless steel to protect the rim.

Cleaning, testing and lighting

With cleaning devices such as ultrasonic cleaners, you get parts clean quickly. Choose the volume that suits your work. With test devices you check brake pressure, compression and battery condition. Pay attention to the connections and the number of parts. Good workshop lighting is essential. Look at the battery voltage and capacity for a long working time.

Power and fluids

With hydraulic components you must choose the right size. Pay attention to the length and outside diameter of the hose, and check the thread of your connections. For transferring fluids, use reservoirs, funnels and pumps. Choose a reservoir that is resistant to the fluid you use. With caulking guns and grease guns you apply sealant and lubricate bearings.

Pressing, prying and protecting

A workshop press presses bearings and bushes out or mounts them. Choose the tonnage based on the work. With mounting levers and pry bars you pry parts loose. Short models work in tight spaces, long ones give more leverage. Creepers, knee pads and protective mats make the work more comfortable and protect your body.

Small aids and chemicals

Magnetic lifters, pick-up tools and mirrors help you pick up metal parts and inspect hard-to-reach areas. Choose a magnetic lifter based on pulling force and length. For maintenance and small repairs you need industrial chemicals. Pay attention to the content: 1 litre is enough for small jobs, 5 litres for intensive use. Consumables such as screws, nuts and cable lugs run out. Keep the right assortments in stock.

Selection guide

For an oil change, choose oil service. For changing tyres, tyre service. For lifting a car, floor jacks and axle stands. For heavy pressing, a workshop press. This way you always find the right tool for the job.
