Choosing a bench vice
Jaw width and opening
The jaw width determines the size of your workpiece. Wide jaws spread the clamping force over large parts. Narrow jaws work fine for precision tasks. Also check the maximum opening. It must be larger than your thickest workpiece.
Mounting type
You mount a vice on a workbench or table. Choose a swivel base if you need to work at different angles. A fixed base is more stable for heavy filing or hammering. Check the mounting holes and the screws supplied.
Soft jaws
For soft materials such as aluminium or plastic, use soft jaws. These prevent scratches and damage. They are available in plastic and aluminium, in different widths. This way you can clamp delicate parts securely.
A vice belongs to the basics of hand tools. If you want to cut your workpiece to size first, take a look at saws and saw blades. For finishing the edges you use files. With measuring tools you check whether everything is the right size.
