Choosing the right hose clamp
Determine the size by outside diameter
Measure the outside diameter of your hose before ordering. The clamp should be slightly reamer than that diameter. This ensures a proper grip without damaging the hose. Clamps are available in sets or individually. A set is useful if you want to keep different sizes in stock.
Stainless steel or galvanised: what to consider
Stainless steel clamps are suitable for moist environments, such as engine bays or under the vehicle. They do not rust and last longer. Galvanised clamps are for internal work where moisture is not present. Choosing the wrong material can lead to rapid corrosion and leaks.
Band width and installation
The width of the band determines how the pressure is distributed. A wide band distributes pressure better over the hose, preventing damage. Use a socket or ratchet with the correct socket for tightening. Do not overtighten, as this can pinch the hose.
Hose clamps fall under consumables, just like hose connectors that you fit on the same hose. To bundle hoses and lines neatly, use cable ties, and for a lasting seal at the connection choose sealing rings and O-rings.
